William Johnson, a slave who was freed, started out as a barber and eventually owned several barber shops, rental property, a farm, and timberland; he also kept a lengthy personal diary that offers insights into life in the pre-Civil War South and relations between whites and free blacks.

Bookstores, libraries, and book lovers wrap books in paper (often brown kraft paper) and write only the first sentence, genre, or a few key descriptive tropes on the outside to encourage people to read without judging by the cover.
