The city lies in a basin at the confluence of rivers such as the Gounokawa River, and is known as an agricultural and commercial hub for the northern part of the prefecture.
Formed in 2004 through the merger of several municipalities, the city is also famous for its "Mist Town" and cormorant fishing.
This historic region was once home to the Miyoshi Domain during the Edo period.
